Westinghouse’s AP300 Small Modular Reactor Enters UK Generic Design Assessment Process
- 23/09/2024
Westinghouse Electric Company is proud to announce that its AP300 small modular reactor (SMR) design has officially entered the UK’s Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process. This significant milestone, approved by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, is a crucial first step towards deploying the AP300 in the United Kingdom.
The AP300 is the only SMR currently under consideration for UK development that leverages the proven technology of an existing gigawatt-scale Generation III+ reactor, Westinghouse’s AP1000. By utilizing this advanced and reliable foundation, the AP300 offers a compact, scalable, and efficient solution to meet the UK’s growing demand for clean, sustainable energy.
With this approval, Westinghouse is set to support the UK in achieving its net-zero targets and enhancing energy security through innovative nuclear technology.
