The Evolution of StocExpo and the Tank Storage Industry: A 20-Year Retrospective
As the tank storage industry prepares to celebrate two decades of StocExpo, the largest international event for tank storage professionals, it’s a fitting time to reflect on the tremendous advancements and changes witnessed in the sector. In a recent interview, Margaret (“Mags”), Portfolio Director for Tank Storage Magazine and StocExpo expert, and Anamika, Editor of Tank Storage Magazine and Head of Content for StocExpo, discussed their experiences, standout moments, and the future of the industry.
A Journey Through 20 Years of StocExpo
Mags, having been with the event since its early days, reminisced about her involvement with the second-ever StocExpo back in 2006. Over the years, the event has become a crucial platform for the tank storage community. One of her fondest memories is the launch of the Tank Storage Awards—a feature that has helped recognize significant achievements in safety and sustainability.
“This community-led event has given the industry a chance to highlight its successes,” Mags noted, emphasizing how the awards ceremony and gala dinner have since become core components of the annual event.
For Anamika, a relative newcomer to StocExpo, the opportunity to chair the “Women in Tanks” panel was particularly meaningful. The discussion brought the often-overlooked issues of diversity and inclusion to the forefront, with men in the audience asking how they could better support women in the industry. This, she felt, was a powerful moment, reflective of a growing change in the industry’s dynamics.
Technological Advancements: Drones, Robotics, and AI
One of the most notable changes over the years has been the integration of advanced technologies into the tank storage sector. Mags highlighted the introduction of drones, robotics, and AI—something that would have been unimaginable two decades ago. In response to this growing trend, StocExpo has embraced the future by launching a new “Drones and Robotics Zone” in partnership with Sprint Robotics. This zone offers attendees the chance to witness firsthand how these technologies are revolutionizing the industry, enhancing both safety and operational efficiency.
This year’s event will also feature a demo zone, where attendees can see robots in action on the show floor, marking another first for StocExpo.
Addressing Future Fuels and Sustainability
Both Mags and Anamika underscored the importance of the energy transition in the industry’s evolution. While hydrogen is often seen as the fuel of the future, ammonia is emerging as a key player, and this year’s event will host the Clean Ammonia Storage Conference in partnership with NH3. This addition reflects the industry’s broader shift toward sustainability and its response to global events, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which accelerated the push for alternative energy sources.
“We’re no longer just an oil and gas show,” Anamika pointed out. StocExpo has evolved to focus on future fuels, energy infrastructure, and logistics providers. The rebranding of terminals, such as Oil Tanking’s transition to Advario, signifies the shift from being perceived solely as oil and gas companies to becoming integral parts of the energy supply chain.
A Global, Inclusive Future for Tank Storage
Diversity, equity, and inclusion have been important themes within the tank storage industry in recent years, and StocExpo is committed to fostering these values. With dedicated panels and discussions, the event encourages younger generations to explore careers in the industry while continuing to support initiatives like the Women in Tanks panel.
Looking forward, StocExpo has expanded its international reach. The introduction of the American Pavilion and a growing number of speakers from regions like the Middle East, Asia, and the United States ensure that the event remains globally relevant. The team is excited about the new terminals and participants joining this year’s conference, promising fresh perspectives and insights from around the world.
Networking and Celebrating 20 Years
In addition to the innovative sessions and showcases, StocExpo has always provided an excellent platform for networking. This year promises even more interactive elements, including the much-anticipated terminal tour at Liquin Terminal and the launch of a photo contest, which will feature projects from terminals around the globe.
For Mags and Anamika, StocExpo is more than just a trade show; it’s a community event. The off-site party on day one will give attendees the chance to relax, network, and enjoy the festive atmosphere as they celebrate 20 years of StocExpo and Tank Storage Magazine.
As Mags summed up, “We go to a lot of events, but StocExpo is one you want to go to.”
Looking Ahead
With its 20th edition around the corner, StocExpo continues to grow, evolve, and lead the tank storage industry into a future focused on sustainability, diversity, and technological innovation. As the event prepares to welcome participants from all over the world on March 11-12, the sense of community, progress, and anticipation is stronger than ever.
