StocExpo FETSA Conference: Energy Transition at the Port of Hamburg
- 20/02/2024
How is the world approaching the energy transition? That’s one of many questions that will be explored at StocExpo’s FETSA conference. Panellist, Jannes Elgen, Head of Port Energy Solutions at the Hamburg Port Authority, will explain how the Port of Hamburg is transitioning from fuel oil products to the fuels of the future. Here’s a preview…
If you were to visit the Port of Hamburg today, you wouldn’t see an awful lot that would indicate a massive effort to transition to the fuels of the future, apart from an electrolyser and some small construction sites.
All companies at the port are doing something, though. Each have concrete plans for import terminals, electrolysers, hydrogen pipelines, biofuel projects, and the associated deconstruction and cleanup to make way for these new facilities. By 2027, most of these projects will be complete.
While we’re in the early stages of the energy transition, the Port of Hamburg is among the early movers, and there are a number of challenges we’ve had to overcome. We’re not just a city port, the Port of Hamburg is the third largest port in Europe, and takes up a tenth of the city. There’s added safety pressures that come with that, and we have to consider public acceptance of what we’re doing.
Right now, the business case for the energy transition is still challenging, simply because demand as well as the market price for green hydrogen is unknown. As a land lord port, we’re not involved with the sales end of green hydrogen, but we are confident that the market will evolve over the next years.. With technology and new products, you need first movers willing to take on the premiums. As we’ve learnt with things like electric vehicles or with the offshore business, that’s how new markets are started.
At StocExpo’s FETSA Conference, I’ll be talking on a panel discussing the worldwide approach to the energy transition. I’ll be talking on the Port of Hamburg’s challenges and what we’ve learnt along the way. Critically, I’ll be talking on the business case of the energy transition.
I look forward to seeing you at StocExpo 2024. Register now to attend StocExpo 2024.
