KF builds 2 million-gallon ATS terminal
- 25/05/2021
US firm Koch Fertilizer (KF) is building a 2 million gallon (9.1 million L) terminal to store ammonium thiosulphate (ATS) at its Fort Dodge facility in Iowa, US.
The ATS tank will be insulated and will have an internal coating, for winter storage and tank reliability. It will be connected to the existing automated urea ammonium nitrate (UAN) loadout infrastructure, which will allow KF to mix ATS with either UAN or water in a single truck to create customised fertiliser blends. Current UAN loadout ability will be unaffected. The terminal will be able to load a truck in around 20 minutes and will support 24-hour loading. KF expects the terminal to be commissioned and operational in December 2021.
KF says that the terminal will support growing demand for ATS. The additional storage and loading capacity will allow the company to supply more customers with ATS from its affiliate Flint Hills Resources. KF markets all of the 100,000 short tons (90,700 tonnes) of ATS that Flint Hill Resources produces at its Pine Bend refinery annually.
‘In the last few years, retailers and farmers have had difficulty finding adequate supply of ATS, and at the same time demand continues to grow,’ says Scott McGinn, Koch Fertilizer executive vice president. ‘By building on our relationship with Flint Hills Resources and our terminal expertise, we can provide additional ATS capacity to the region and better serve our customers into the future.’
